1Arena gate location (ideally towards C end of school) for judge’s view or simulated gate.
Obstacle.
Gate. Either use arena gate if suitable (Note. The gate is generally fastened by a loop of rope over the gatepost) & easily visible both sides from judges view at C. OR simulated gate (a pair of jump wings or other secure posts min 3ft6 high with a rope attached one end & loop the other end) positioned safely without obscuring other obstacles at C end of arena.
Objective.
The rider must open the gate, ride through it & close it again whilst remaining mounted.

Obstacle.
S Bend
A maze of poles forming a 'square' S shape with openings of 1m wide at the entrance and exit ends (opposite corners facing the A&C ends of arena)

Objective.
Enter S bend from A end of the arena. Ride through bend without touching or stepping over poles, with regular forward movement, whilst horse & rider maintaining balance.

3Between F & M
Obstacle.
Simulated low branches
Objective.
At chosen pace either walk, trot or canter, duck close to horse as though riding through low branches, whilst maintaining chosen pace & balance of horse / rider.

4E in of track
Obstacle. Simulated ditch.
2 poles parallel to A&C sides of arena 40cm apart
Objective.
To negotiate an obstacle in the path of horse & rider, without hooves stepping in ditch or touching / dislodging poles. Demonstrating willingness of horse maintaining chosen pace as well as correct approach & aids of rider. Can be ridden from walk, trot or canter.

5Obstacle
Repeat S bend in Obstacle 2 by entering from the C end of the arena

6To dismount horse safely & effectively in the event of an emergency. • Both feet out of the stirrups
• Cross right stirrup over front of horse
• If carrying a whip hold in left hand
• Dismount
• Place left stirrup over saddle
• Take the reins over the horses head, unless wearing a martingale.
